Freightliner Trucks recently developed a 122SD Sleeper Auto Hauler in partnership with Fontaine Modification Company. This development was in response to a request for an integral sleeper design from Diversified Automotive, a committed Freightliner customer.

Diversified Automotive operates a modern, well-maintained fleet of over 200 car carriers throughout the Northeast region of the United States. Their specialty is working with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), including major automotive manufacturers. The bulk of their routes are in the Northeast, including transportation to and from regional auctions and dealerships.

For most runs, Diversified Automotive trusts the Freightliner 114SD day cab, a proven workhorse with power, maneuverability, visibility, and efficiency. There was just one thing missing — a sleeper for runs that require an overnight stay. The 122SD offers a wide variety of options to suit numerous hauling and vocational applications including an integrated sleeper. So Boston Freightliner worked with the Freightliner vocational sales team and partnered with Fontaine Modification Company to make it happen.

Fontaine took a “clean sheet” approach to remove 18 inches of overall height from the Freightliner 122SD. First, they dropped the cab closer to the chassis by five inches using Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA)–supplied computer-aided design (CAD) data.

Next, they designed new roof structure components to remove 13 inches from the cab roof height while keeping it structurally sound and safe for drivers. Fontaine maximized the use of original equipment (OE) interior parts to provide the best possible operator comfort and sleeping space. When ordered with a DTNA car hauler–specific chassis option, its overall laden roof height hovers around 100 inches.

The 122SD is available with Detroit® DD13®, DD15®, and DD16® engines with up to 600 hp. Detroit® Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service helps fleets and owner-operators make informed service decisions within minutes of a fault event. The 122SD is also available with the Cummins ISX15 and a wide variety of transmission, suspension and frame options to suit nearly any application.
